Shock Collar is a song I wrote, recorded, and mixed. This song intends to explore cycles of self-inflicted harm, compulsion, and running back to a familiar thing even though it hurts. This song is sung from a third-person perspective, through the metaphor of a dog repeatedly running into an electric fence to reflect the cause and effect.
The song was designed to be restrained yet immersive to the listener. The song blends layers of distorted piano, strings, and vocals, with additional sound design and textural elements that bring you into the world the song builds. The layers clash together, lingering in patterns of eerie repetition itself, allowing the listener to inhabit this emotional space of inevitability, longing, and self-betrayal.
